WHAT IS R-VALUE and How Much Do I Need?

The "R" stands for resistance to heat flow. A high R-value means greater resistance to heat flow and greater insulating value. All types of insulation have an R-value per inch. For example, fiberglass batt insulation provides between R-3.14 per inch and R-4.3 per inch of insulating value. Spray foam insulation has a higher insulation value –around R-6 per inch. Insulation is also measured by total R-value. So a 3 ½-in.-thick fiberglass batt in 2x4 wall cavity would provide total R-value of R-13 or so. The same stud cavity filled with spray foam insulation would have an R-value of R-21.

INSULATION TIPS
  • • Consider factors such as your climate, home design, and budget when selecting insulation for your home.
  • • Use higher R-value insulation, such as spray foam, on exterior walls and in cathedral ceilings to get more insulation with less thickness.
  • • One of the most cost-effective ways to make your home more comfortable year-round is to add insulation to your attic, including the attic trap or access door, which is relatively easy.

Reviews

Rainier Insulation is affordable, on time, and honest. I had a lot of questions for a curious section of my attic while they were blowing cellulose, and the installers did a great job of explaining what we were seeing. What I thought could be an issue turned out to be fine, and they had me walk through and inspect it to make sure I was happy. It took a while to sort through quotes for what ended up being a simple insulation job, the big companies gave a range that was ridiculous to me when I provided them my budget and desired outcome.

I was ready to shelve the project when an inspector I've used and referred myself laughed and gave me Rainier Insulation, he uses them exclusively and told me to have them walk through. John came and asked me what I wanted, not what he could sell me, but just what the job was. I said a simple blown cellulose job, install baffles and air seal where there's a few leaky spots, he gave me a quote and said there's some ducting that's uninsulated but wrapping that and touching up anything else would be a simple job and included....
